I was reading through some old challenge pieces, and I had an idea for a new type of word war!
Also, people create impressive things on YouTube. (Like the infamous “Why Is The Rum Gone,” heretofore to be called The-Remix-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named.)
I bring you: the Music Writing Challenge!
Basically, the idea is to write a short story in the space of one song. If you’re unfamiliar with the song, you can listen to it once–listening actively–I mean no multitasking! No Facebooking, no looking at stuff on Amazon, just listening to the music–not necessarily even watching the music video. Just listening. And then, when you’re done, you open a blank Word document, start up the music, and write to it. When the music is done, stop writing. If you absolutely MUST continue your story, make sure to put a line or a note or a page break or SOMETHING there to denote that this part was not written as a part of the challenge.
Be sure to post your completed story (or story fragment) on your blog and link me back to it! I’d love to read them all 😀
Our first challenge will be written around the Skillet song “Hero.”
I plan on posting my own addition to the Challenge shortly.
Good luck!
I tend to write slowly . . . I cannot get a decent amount of story done in the space of one song. But I’ll probably do this anyway.
😀
As to writing slowly… I can normally do 300 words in 10 minutes, so I don’t know how I compare….
I range from 100 to 300 words in ten minutes . . . just depends how inspired I am.
Doesn’t it always? 😛
I’ve written up to 600 words in ten minutes, and that was on a very inspired day. Most of the time I like to take a little longer, fitting the words together so they roll out just right.
Exactly- I like to find the right words. And add to that the fact that I generally handwrite instead of typing, and I’m a really slow writer compared to a lot of people I know.
Sometimes I just get in stride and then go from there…
Ooh, I’m in! Just… have to get this assignment done first.
Right. I’m probably going to do crafting stuff today…

I’ve done this before. I find that I can’t write a decent enough short story in that space of time, but I can make what I write fit into that amount of time when read out loud, timing elements of the story with dramatic parts of the music. 🙂 The last time I did it, I wrote to the song “Lily’s Theme” by Alexandre Desplat. The piece turned out really well.
Sometimes you get really good stories from it, sometimes you don’t. I tend to write really well to some pieces of music…

I think I’ve found my daily writing exercise for today… 😉 Though I’ll have to turn my phone upside down so I’m not distracted by the music video. 😛 That’s some intense music, there…
Whoop! 😛
Such a cool idea! I’ll have to try this.
😀 I can’t wait to read what you come up with!
Woooow. o.o This would be… so hard. I mean, I write fast, but think slow, so if I don’t know what I’m writing, it would be nearly impossible to write a full short story in a mater of a song.
BUT, I am up for challenges, so I should try to do this. *nods* And who knows? It would be awesome if I came up with a new story idea. 😀
I’m glad you’re taking the challenge and I can’t wait to read it! 😀
