because it's cool, blogging, doctor who, history, superheroes, tags

Another day, another tag… I don’t remember who tagged me with this one. It was probably either Sarah, WriteFury or Proverbs31teen. IDK.

Anyway. Excelsior!

1. You’re on a deserted island, and you find a cave. What would you expect to find in it? Probably something dangerous. Like a mountain lion. Or a mutated pygmy. Or evil shrimp.

2. If you could have one superpower, which would you pick? Electromagnetism. There are so many ways it could be used… if you can create really super-strong magnetic fields you can levitate people, besides the obvious throwing lightning around. It’s awesome.

3. What one song would you choose for the theme music for a movie about your life?

(Because I’m really a superhero.)

4. You can only wear one color for the rest of your life. What color would you pick? Probably green.

5. What’s one thing you want to do that’s wild, crazy, or unusual? Randomly prank all the customers at my current job. But of course I can’t do that. I’m on good behavior for the next two weeks until I am DONE WITH IT FOR GOOD. I found another job, yay! And it pays better. I just hope it turns out well…

6. If you had to give a speech to the whole world for five minutes, what topic would it be about? Just one? Man, it would be hard to stick to one topic…

I’d probably talk about how we should keep working towards good things despite our mistakes.

7. You get to have lunch with any three famous people, present or past! Who would you pick? I’d like to meet Sophie Scholl, an obscure South American president (Garcia) whose whole name I can’t remember but who was an INCREDIBLE leader, and also Josephine (Napoleon’s wife) so we could hear all about Napoleon’s most embarrassing mannerisms. 😛 AWESOME blackmail and/or trivia material.

8. What is your favorite smell, and why? Petrichor! Or baking bread. Funny how they both involve ozone…

9. Share one of your favorite quotes. “Make all of space and time your backyard and what have you got? A back yard.” (That’s probably the one quote that really explained how different Ten and Eleven were. Ten’s sense of wonder was VERY different. It’s hard to explain. They went about it different ways? That’s the closest I can get.)

10. Give us two true statements about yourself and one false statement, and see if your followers can guess which one is false. Oooh, I love this game!

  1. I have never eaten cotton candy.
  2. I have scars on the heel of my hand and in between my pointer and middle fingers on my right hand, both from broken glass.
  3. I hate impatiens.

Now, because I don’t know who gave me this tag, I’m going to just tag random people.

Coruscantbookshelf, WriteFury, Sarah, Proverbs31teen, and Miko. If you haven’t done this tag before, you’re up.

(I think for this one all the questions stay the same, so I’m good to go. Anyway, laterz!)

Thanks for reading, and God Bless!

More frustration.

Truly Geek Fandoms

Erin is back for another rant about fandoms!

This is not actually about what you normally think when you hear the word “fandom”, though. It’s actually more of a closed-circuit phenomenon, really…

What am I talking about? (Have I lost my readers already? Oh, dear. Your pardon, readers all.)

Basically, this is the most stereotyped fandoms out there that I’m talking about. Drum roll, please–

I’m talking about fandoms that are better known as “school subjects,” “study projects,” and “general education courses.”

Now, I know you’re all thinking, “Whaaaat? is Erin nuts?” I can assure you… well, actually I can’t. 😛 But anyways, no, I do know what I’m talking about.

I’m passionate about theoretic science, partly through my interest in science fiction. (Which is why I think that vampires are lazy and if a zombie apocalypse does really happen, your biggest survival tool will be bug spray, you will need to take carefully-stored-and-preserved iodine supplements, and mosquitoes will be your biggest enemy. I may explain why in another post.)

Iris is passionate about American history. (So am I, for that matter. In fact, I’m passionate about most history!) And aren’t we all passionate about literature and media? Don’t we all get into arguments about bias in the media? And don’t most fandoms originate in books? We’re also passionate about culture, sociology, and psychology. Not to mention that Iris and I are advocates of algebra.

Basically, I’m saying that we need to redefine the word “fandom” and re-think the use of the word “geek.” Even someone who self-professedly “doesn’t like to think” can be a geek. Even someone who isn’t permanently heart-broken by the end of The Lord of the Rings can be in a fandom. All of us have the potential for intellectualism. Why don’t we delete the stereotypes surrounding it and just embrace it?

Just some thoughts for back to school. 😉

completely random posts, confusing nonsense, disney, history, military, pixar, rambling musings, small rants, the age old debate

Poor Mr. Lasseter.

It can’t be easy to keep all the facts in line–especially when faced with such a fanatic history buff as my brother.

But I digress.

This is about Planes, the new Disney/Pixar movie. It’s enjoyable. It’s disorienting. It’s everything a good movie should be…

Except, sadly, for having exact historically accuracy.

Warning: Spoilers. Proceed no farther unless wearing correct protective equipment.

While we were watching it (spoiler alert!!!) I ran upstairs to ask Sprite if the Corsair had originally been intended for something other than dogfighting. He said, no, it was specifically designed to combat the Japanese Zeros.

“Snap! goes our third thread, leaving us exactly where we started.” –Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles

Well, I kicked back. And then learned that the Corsair did not fight at Guadacanal. It had not been built until after the US gained air supremacy in the Pacific, two years later! And, since the Corsair had been specifically designed to combat the Zero, it is hardly likely that only one plane would be left, out of an entire sixteen-plane squadron. Granted, though, in the flashback, they were coming through some pretty nasty flack out there, and there were battleships in the mix as well. They were outnumbered, clearly.

Not to criticize the movie. It was fun to watch (though admittedly, I have not seen the whole thing yet, thanks to Raya’s loving attentions.) It was entirely what you’d expect from Disney/Pixar.

My good friend Iris tells me I have a tendency to over-think things, to look too critically at the details.

She’s probably right

Oh well.
